Stephen Hawking: The Theory Of Everything

Well! Have you watched the movie yet? If the answer is no,
Please…. Book a ticket rightaway!
If you are in a the mood for the slightest bit of motivation or even if you are not, this is a movie you shouldn’t be missing on. I am not talking this as a movie buff, although I would not be wrong if I say it as a movie buff either. Rated 7.8 on IMDB and 79% on rottentomatoes, this movie lives up to more than it promises.
The story of perhaps one of the most brilliant scientists of this century – Stephen Hawking! What better name for a movie – The Theory of Everything!
And the movie really has got everything, it has got determination, gut, inspiration, love, tolerance, sympathy, empathy, dedication and what not. Coin out any book from the dictionary of success and you will find an instance here. The acting, direction is top class and the movie will sweep you away.
Well I shall stop hailing this movie before it becomes a bit too much and I end up overselling it. But it sure is a damn great movie, made for the intelligent spectator.

 WHAT THE MOVIE HAS?
The movie clearly takes you through the journey of life of Stephen Hawking – How his quest for a unified theory of everything has sustained the tides of time, the challenges he has had and the experiences he endured to get there to be among the top scientists in the world. The movie takes you through his life – right from the time he was diagnosed of a multiple nerve disorder and the doctor says
“You have only 2 years to live”
And don’t worry, it is not a traumatic experience for the viewer, the movie is not made to gain any sympathy anywhere, if anything it makes you admire the man even more.

THE ESSENCE OF LOVE.
I love the display of character both by Jane Hawking and Stephen Hawking. Although sometimes, I am at crossroads to understand whose character I should admire the most, the sacrifices made by Jane or the sacrifices of Hawking.

THE RESURGENCE
There is a constant question in my mind as I watch this movie – what kept him going?
Was it the passion of science?
Was it the love of Jane which keeps him strong?
Was it his sheer internal strength to face the odds?
Perhaps I will never know but from the perspective of motivation, I would certainly say that all the three play a very significant role.

THE HUMANITY
All through the movie, I can identify the facets of humanity displayed by each of the characters.
The humility of his teacher who admires and points Stephen in the right direction.
The undying love and empathy of Jane Hawking
The appreciation of his friends
Of course the mockery by fellow men, maybe not on his appearance but on his theories.
The Philosophy.
What keeps a man going? When someone tells you that you have two years to live, what do you think of doing?
How do you think you would react?
What would be the philosophy of life that governs you?

And when someone asks Stephen this question, his answer was -
There should be no boundaries to human endeavor. We are all different. However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. While there’s life, there is hope.
This coming from a man who has really seen the lows and the highs.
Till now, I really had an amount of respect for this man, but after this movie, it has been of total veneration. I can’t wait to get my hands on his book – A brief history of time. I am not sure how much of it I will be able to understand, but I would certainly love to have it in my library.
Hope you enjoy this movie. We strongly recommend you do :)

How Does A Homeless Man Spend $100?

What would you do if you get $100? There are many things you can think about. Buy a couple of dresses or a gadget or party hard on new year’s eve or much more… When you have extra money you will figure out extra ways to spent it.
Ever wondered what a poor man does?
(“Oh Ya…… we know, he begs every day and at the end of the day he goes to a liquor shop. Oh! It’s his routine… I would never ever want to encourage something like that….”  This is what most of us think and it’s partially right as most of them whom we have seen do the same.)
Here is a social experiment on how a homeless man spends $100 given to him.

The homeless man’s kind act touched your heart and you were happy to know $100 was spent on the right thing. It might also have filled you with a doubt if he is the only one who did it as you have experienced seeing most of them spend the money on their addictions. Just because we have experienced a few who don’t value your money by spending it on the right things it doesn’t mean everyone is the same and it reminds of the most iterated lines“Never judge a book by its cover.” How you wish every homeless man valued money like this, you would be very happy to help them. But I strongly believe there are people like this man, might not be many in number but a few at least. I think you can identify them at times and your heart goes out to help them.
But there are many of us who wouldn’t even bother to make an effort to see if the homeless man is genuine. A little observation and a little humbleness can help you find them amongst the many.
It’s the end of the year, you have had some wonderful moments and tried filling your life with all happiness you could and just imagine how much more happiness you could fill in if you could fill happiness in someone’s life before the year ends.

Realistic New Year's Resolutions For 2015

A very happy new year everyone. 2015 has just begun, time for celebrations, parties and need not to mention about resolutions. I am sure the word ‘resolution’ has come to your mind at least once since 12AM. What have you planned for this year? Now don’t say you don’t want to make one as you are afraid to keep it working. It’s ok, it’s never bad to try something that can make your life better.
Here are 9 realistic resolutions you can make for this year.
EAT INTELLIGENTLY
zz_apelA famous French author François de La Rochefoucauld said, “To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art.” I know this is not something you would want to hear at the very first thought of a resolution, but you also know how important it is. I think this is something we give up on very easily, why not start this new year with a resolution and promise to not break the resolution at least this time.
Maintain a journey or you can download applications like Calorie Counter- MyFitnessPalNoom. These apps can help you to keep track on your intake and yes they are one good ways to document your intake and it would want to make you eat more healthy food and quit the ones which are dangerous to you.;)

EXERCISE FOR A BETTER YOU
johnny_automatic_jogging_boyDid you know, exercise has a lot more to do than just offer you a better body? It affects your health, mind, mood and attitude and all in a positive way. What better could you ask for a routine of half an hour every day? It is going to be tough for the first few days, but that’s how every good thing happens. Most of the times it’s ok to sacrifice momentary pain for a permanent pleasure
So…. Pull your old pair of socks and shoes, push yourself and workout on a better you because it’s only when you burn it you earn it :).
Well I do agree that getting up everyday and going to the gym to work out is not the most inspiring thing to do.

START A NEW HOBBY
Something you can gift yourself this new year with a guaranteed return of happiness. Start something new. Join a music class or how about dance? Why not try your hands on art? Or why not do gardening? Try your hands on writing or try your hands on cooking.. Try this, try that….Start something  fresh, something you never heard about or something you never knew. Explore yourself, you will feel great and will be so glad to have started a new hobby.

READ ‘N’ NUMBER OF BOOKS
03-March_Reading_for_lifeSet a target, set your ‘n’ or even go beyond it, you will expand. Books are the incredible source of information. If you don’t have a practice of reading books, make now. Read at least 1 book every month, read all kinds, you will enjoy it. Books help you expand yourself and opens upon to a new world which you want to live in.

DO SOMETHING YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH
COMFORTZONEThis is something you have to try this year. Enough of rationalizing about the uncomfortable things you don’t want to do. Face it, do it and you will not have to deal with the uncomfortableness the next time.
Comfort Zone is sure a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.”Deal with the uncomfortable conversations, relationships or even uncomfortable acts. Just do it. Save yourself from the nagging thoughts and disturbing dilemma. It sure is a tough thing, to battle against your mind to shut all the excuses you have been giving yourself, but then if you don’t do this then you are probably missing out many wonderful things.

DO ONE THING FOR SOMEONE ELSE EVERY DAY.
I know this is something you do. But every day? I am not quite sure of this. Neither I do it every day, but I want to do it more often and yes this is one resolution which is at the top of my list.
I wondered….How do I do it? Does it require much of an effort? Or maybe not… If only most us know how a smile can affect someone else. How talking nice to someone can make them feel better. How calling up an old friend will solve the ego issues. How helping your loved ones with the smallest help can bring a change. Oh… There are plenty things to do. You just need to start with a couple of things and you will discover a heap more to do.
“Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting some on yourself.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

TALK TO SOMEONE WHOM YOU ARE AFRAID OF.
BlacksmithTalkFill up the courage and get set to talk to someone whom you are afraid of. Maybe someone from the family or friends. Just one talk can work wonders with your relationship and sometimes that is the one thing which keeps you away from what you desired for. Talk your heart out. It’s ok if the other person doesn’t respond in a desired way, at least you will be happy to know you did something about it. And most of the times it only matters about what you did for what you wanted.
It’s always better to live without a guilt of “What if…….?” in life.

MAKE A NOTE OF HAPPY MOMENTS EVERY DAY.
notepad2I have a practice. Whenever I come across special moments in my life or whenever I am happy with small reasons or sometimes with no reasons at all, I write it in a piece of paper and put it in the happiness jar. And on the days when I feel all the doors of happiness are shut, I open my happiness jar and I pull out a random paper filled with memories to bring back my happiness.
You can maintain a journal. You can highlight the moments of happiness in a day. And the days when you feel that the day wasn’t worth much of a thing, you will be surprised to discover a little something which made you happy, this will ensure you that the day was well spent and you have something to rejoice about.
This practice will help you to appreciate very small things in life and yes all these small things wrap up to make a big cheerful you :)

HOW TO READ BETTER AND FASTER?

There is too much to read and only a short amount of time, you have tried everything you know, but somehow you think that you can increase the speed of your reading, but at the same time you do not want to compromise on the quality. It is a reader’s dilemma, how do you do it, what are fast, effective and efficient ways to do this?
Well, we come up with 10 simple effective steps to read better and faster and more efficiently.
10 Simple Tips To Increase Efficiency

1) THE PURPOSE OF THE ARTICLE
What is the article trying to convey, what is the message it if focusing on? Every passage or article is a story and it is trying to convey a message to you. Identify what the author is trying to say, if you would give a heading to that passage, what would that heading be? That will be the theme of the passage, hunt for it.

2) YOUR PURPOSE OF READING IT
What is your purpose of reading the article? Are you going for the facts or the opinion? If you are looking for the opinion, there will be a lot of details you can skim or even skip to save some time for yourself. If you are looking for the facts, just make a note of them, don’t try to remember them right away, just highlight them or use shorthand and write a couple of points per paragraph

3) DON’ READ IT OUT LOUD!
Our eyes and brain work faster than the mouth and voice. The more we try to vocalize and read it out load, it just means that we are using more time to complete a single sentence. Instead of looking at the comprehension like a passage, look at it like a picture, a part or a fragment of the story and how each part adds together – like bones of a skeletal structure.

4) READ THE PICTURE NOT THE WORDS
We are usually trained to assimilate the words and then make a picture of them. Even while reading this post, how are you reading it? Are you reading the words first and then associating a picture to it? If you are doing that, you are going through the traditional way. Skip that, just look at the picture, just look at what image the line or the sentence creates in your mind.

5) READ WITH YOUR EYES AND NOT THE LIPS
What is the span of your eye. Do you move your eyelids word to word or do you read it sentence by sentence or line by line. Instead of reading one word at once, look at one sentence at a time or a couple of them at a time. This way you are looking for the meaning than the individual word

6) DON’T BE LOST IN THE DETAILS
It is very easy to be stuck in the details and interesting facts. In order to avoid that trap, identify the purpose of the passage, if it is leisure or a novel, take your time, savor it. But if it is an academic article, then skip that, just look at what you want out of it than what all is in there. For all you know you may be looking at one or two points in the article and the rest can just be a landing to that. Be clever, move to that. Be a treasure hunter, someone who looks for clues at each step to go to the bigger picture instead of being lost in the details.

7) KNOW YOUR SPEED
It pays to know where you stand, time yourself, identify the word per minute speed you are generating. Knowing where you are helps to know where you can be. Do it every 3 days, see how you improve. It is very easy to increase your speed from 250 words per minute to 500 words per minute and you can do that without much effort. All you have to do is train yourself a little better, avoid the regular traps and mistakes.

8) IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE MEANING OF A WORD
Well, skip it. Don’t worry about the exact meaning of a word, you will be able to derive it from the context. There is no point in being stuck in the details, one word cannot harm the entire theme of the passage or the theme of the sentence. You have to be clever, you have to be smart, just feel free to neglect it, you can come back to it later

9) DISTRACTIONS
Although we all know that it is best to be in a quiet place, we sometimes feel that an additional resource can amplify your speed. Steer away from these traps, do not try to multi task, esp while you are reading, make this the only task you do. If you are training yourself to increase the speed and accuracy, then stop treating it like leisure, it is not, it is more of a work in the initial days and it will pay you off very well.

10) BE CURIOS
No matter what purpose you are reading it for, it is something which you are not going to do again, atleast not in the same state of mind. Be curios about it, know that there is something to learn, an opportunity to understand something and realize something new and if possible even integrate in your life. Make the best out of it, enjoy it and don’t lose that creative spirit in you. It is going to pay off exceedingly well.

If these suggestions helped, there is one book which made a huge difference in both my speed and comprehension and I would love to suggest the same : It is  How To Read Better & Faster
